Vatican City, October 2026

It was a privilege to join an extraordinary group of artists, curators, architects, and cultural professionals at the Vatican for The Art of Possibilities: Weaving Together, a seminar convened by the Dicastery for Culture and Education under the leadership of Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, followed by an audience with Pope Leo XIV.

The gathering brought together the people and experiences behind the Dicastery’s engagement with contemporary art in recent years, from the Holy See’s Pavilions at the Venice Art and Architecture Biennales to the exhibitions at Conciliazione 5 and the Dicastery’s own spaces, as well as ArtCut’26, the Triennial of Art of Catholic Universities.

It was an opportunity to share our experiences, exchange different perspectives, and explore new possibilities for collaboration. Our conversations highlighted the strength of community and the importance of nurturing the relationships, knowledge, and trust that cultural projects generate.

During the audience, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the essential role of artists in interpreting the human experience, raising questions, and creating spaces for listening and understanding. At a time increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, he emphasized the importance of art in preserving what makes us human, and called for a renewed alliance between artists and cultural institutions.

His words resonated deeply with the spirit of our gathering and with the work we are developing through the Observatory for the Church and Contemporary Visual Cultures, an initiative I have been building with the Dicastery to strengthen international cultural networks, encourage dialogue, and create continuity across these experiences and the communities they bring together.

My sincere thanks to Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Cristiano Grisogoni, Flaminia Gennari Santori, and all the colleagues who contributed to these two days of thoughtful exchange. I am particularly grateful for the opportunity to meet Pope Leo XIV and to reflect together on the role of art, culture, and community in our contemporary world.
